Against All Odds (14 Part Series)

An innovative TV talk-show series initiated and co-produced by NIF about Israel's social change leaders was aired on Channel Two, the country's most popular TV station. Each week for 13 weeks a leading social activist from the NIF community was featured.

EPISODE 1

 The first program in the series, broadcast in mid- December, featured Chana Kehat, founder of NIF grantee Religious Women's Forum , which was established with funding and assistance from NIF and SHATIL. Kehat spoke of her organization's feminist Orthodox activities, which include rooting out rabbis who have sexually harassed women. Aired at 11 pm, the program enjoyed a 7 percent rating, which is encouragingly high (seven percent equals 132,000 Israeli households).

EPISODE 2

 The second part of the series tells the story of Asaf Phillip, 30, who was born into the ultra-orthodox community, turned his back on religion at 25 and found himself alone in the secular world. At this point he was helped by Hillel: Association for Jews Leaving Ultra-Orthodoxy, a veteran NIF grantee. Subsequently Asaf became a volunteer with Hillel and eventually its Chairman. Thus he came full circle from a recipient of help to a provider of assistance - from helplessness to somebody who empowers others.

EPISODE 3

 The third program in the TV series Against All Odds features Mandy Leighton, 32, a member of the management committee of veteran NIF grantee Bizchut: Center for Human Rights of Persons With Disabilities, who is herself disabled. “When I joined Bizchut,” she recalled. “Suddenly I was worth something. Suddenly I had a purpose." She recently established her own non-profit organization Life Beats Pain – The Society for Fighting Pain.

EPISODE 4

  The fourth program in the Against All Odds documentary TV series features Yaakov Bar Haim, the founder of NIF grantee The Movement for Dignified Living, which has put the subject of homelessness and the need for affordable public housing on the public agenda in Israel and has found housing for dozens of Israelis who are either without a roof over their heads, or have defaulted on their mortgages. A former student leader from Beer Sheva's disadvantaged Daled neighborhood, Bar Haim and his family themselves suffered the indignity of losing their home after his insurance agency business went bankrupt.

EPISODE 5

 The fifth program in the Against All Odds documentary TV series features Dafna Banai, an activist with NIF grantee Machsom Watch, a voluntary group of Israeli women, which conducts daily observations at military checkpoints to monitor human rights abuses. The program tells the story of how this activism has transformed what was previously her comfortable upper middle class existence by exposing her to the ugly everyday reality of occupation.

EPISODE 6

  The sixth program in the Against All Odds documentary TV series features Asher Elias, the son of Ethiopian Jewish immigrants, who gave up a promising career in high-tech to devote himself to empowering his community. He worked for seven years as an activist with NIF grantee Israel Association for Ethiopian Jews before establishing his own organization to train Ethiopian Israelis to work in high-tech.

EPISODE 7
 The seventh program in the Against All Odds documentary TV series features feature Aida Touma-Suliman, Executive Director of veteran NIF grantee Women Against Violence (WAV), which established the first shelters for women in Israel's Arab sector and has pioneered the fight against domestic violence in Arab society.

EPISODE 8

 The eighth program in the series “Against All Odds” presents the story of Hagai Elad - one of the leaders in the struggle for the rights of homosexuals in Jerusalem. Hagai was one of the founders of the “Jerusalem Open House,” with the support of NIF, which accompanies and provides assistance to thousands of homosexuals in Jerusalem and serves as the meeting place for the city's gay community. Since 2002 Hagai has led the annual Jerusalem Gay Pride parade and in August 2006 will host the International Gay Pride parade.

EPISODE 9

 The ninth episode in the series "Against all Odds" features the story of Suhad Abu Ajaj, mother of nine from the village of Kuseifa in the Negev. Following a string of crises in her personal life, Suhad enrolled in SHATIL's Bedouin Women's Empowerment Course. This experience changed her life and she became an activist and social leader who aims to give women like her the opportunities to change their lives.

EPISODE 10

  The tenth part of the TV series Against All Odds last week featured Israela Goren-Graziani, an NIF Law Fellow and Head of the Legal Department of veteran NIF grantee Yedid, The Association for Community Empowerment. As a child she witnessed the power that the legal system has over our lives during a series of court cases over her parent’s divorce, which eventually left her blind mother, herself and her brothers destitute. Growing up in institutions, because her mother could not afford to support her, she vowed as a teenager to become a lawyer to help other disadvantaged women and children.

EPISODE 11

  The eleventh installment of the documentary series Against All Odds tells the story of Guy Finkelstein, who himself suffers from severe learning disabilities and has dedicated his life to those suffering similar problems. Finkelstein is CEO of LESHEM, which, with assistance from SHATIL, advocates for the 15 percent of Israelis with learning disabilities.

EPISODE 12

 The 12th part of the documentary series Against All Odds tells the story of Beni Bomegin, a soccer coach and activist in the struggle to combat racism on the sports pitch through promoting a love of soccer between young Arabs and Jews. Beni is a leading volunteer in NIF's New Voice in the Stadium campaign, which seeks to eradicate racism and violence in Israeli soccer.

EPISODE 13

 The 13th part of Against All Odds brings the story of Jenna and Richard, the children of migrant workers who were raised in and yet are likely to be deported from the only home they have known. They are being assisted by Chevy Korzen, Director of Hotline for Migrant Workers.

EPISODE 14

 The 14th episode of “Against All Odds” presents the story of Renata Shlomov, who is a single mother and young social change leader in the Caucasian immigrant community.
